Middle Years Programme @ Basic Academy

What is the MYP @ Basic?

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a framework of learning.  It used inquiry- and project-based exploration upon big ideas across subjects, so that students can make practical connections between their studies and the real world.

The MYP is a five-year programme, implemented in a partnership between Brown JHS (6th- through 8th-grade) and Basic Academy (9th- and 10th-grade). While rigorous coursework is not inherent in the MYP, students are held to a higher standard of engagement in their own learning experience.  Within the curriculum, emphasis is given to developing the Learner Profile character attributes and Approaches to Learning skills.

Students who complete the MYP requirements find themselves better prepared for later learning experiences.   Students who pursue accelerated courses within the MYP at Brown and Basic should consider themselves well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP).

Who is in the MYP @ Basic?

At Basic Academy, all 9th- and 10th-grade students are enrolled in the MYP curriculum.  The MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.  Students in the MYP explore concepts across eight subject areas (English, second language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, maths, physical and health education, and design) in order to holistically increase student understanding and involvement in their own education.

Career-Related Programme @ Basic Academy

What is the CP @ Basic?

The Career-Related Programme (CP) at Basic Academy combines the inquiry- and exploration-based learning of the other International Baccalaureate programmes with a career and technical education curriculum.  Students will gain personal and professional skills that prepares them for opportunities of further/ higher education, apprenticeships, or employment.

CP students undertake a minimum of two IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses, a core consisting of four components and a career-related study. For CP students, DP courses provide the theoretical underpinning and academic rigour of the programme; the career-related study further supports the programme’s academic strength and provides practical, real-world approaches to learning; and the CP core helps them to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning.

Who is in the CP @ Basic?

CP students are those who have an interest in acquiring job skills in preparation for their future.  Effort and work ethic are the most valuable attributes that a student brings to our program.

Current Basic Academy students should apply for the programme during their 9th-grade year.  To do so, they need to complete the Career-Related Programme application and return it to the IB Office in room 105.

Current Basic Academy students can apply for the programme during their 10th-grade year.  To do so, they need to complete the Diploma Programme application and return it to the IB Office in room 105.

What is the DP @ Basic?

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous, college-preparation course of study.  It continues the inquiry- and exploration-based learning that is a integral part of the Middle Years Programme of education at Basic Academy.  It encourages students to understand connections between ideas and across subject areas, as well as develop depth and breadth of knowledge. The development of critical analysis and communication skills are deeply embedded in the curriculum.  Successful DP students are reflective, well-rounded, and articulate; as a result, they are increasingly valued in the realm of college admissions.

The DP curriculum was developed to align student experiences with those most effective in university admissions and completion.  Each student learns across six subject groups (English, second language acquisition, history, science, math, and psychology or Visual Arts) and the DP core.

The core includes theory of knowledge (TOK), where students reflect on the nature of knowledge and their own understanding; creativity, activity, service (CAS), where students participate in the school and local communities; and the extended essay, allowing students to perform independent research.
